about
monkey grows tentatively through the layering of organic samples, into a steady lo-fi beat with licks of dark electric guitar weaving in and around it like weeds. The rest of the instruments and hushed vocals move through and around its central rhythm, growing steadily in the first half of the song and then unfolding into a wide maximalist instrumental section which features multiple layers of percussion, including hip hop flavoured drum beats, distorted synthesisers, ambient samples and meandering vocals.
Symbolically referencing the “three monkeys” (don’t see, don’t hear, don’t speak) the track explores themes of toxic love and codependency.
The single comes accompanied by a special music video created in collaboration with Swedish contemporary artist Tobias Bradford featuring kinetic sculptures and AI generated animations in which unconventional objects are turned into instruments and built into a modular installation brought to life by the sounds and images that compose it.
